These four Abodes (or Immeasurables) represent the Bodhisattva Ideal. They are guides for those following the Bodhisattva Idea.
Remember the Sanskrit word bodhisattva is made up of two other words: bodhi which means awake and sattva which means being. A Bodhisattva is an awakened being.
Loving Kindness
The wish that all sentient beings, without exception, be happy.
Compassion
The desire to remove harm, unhappiness, and suffering from another or others.
Sympathetic Joy
Joy in the accomplishments or good fortunes of another.
Equanimity
Not to be overpowered by praise/blame, gain/loss, or sorrow/happiness.
