12 slices of day-old bread
1/2 pound of sliced Cheddar cheese
4 large eggs
2 1/2 cups of milk
1/2 teaspoon of prepared mustard
1 tablespoon of finely chopped onion
1 1/2 teaspoon of salt
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Arrange 6 slices of bread (crust removed) in a 12x7x2 inch baking dish. Cover the bread with the cheese, then the remaining bread.
Beat the eggs, add the milk, the mustard, the onion, and the salt and the pepper. Pour this mixture over the bread.
Allow it all to stand for 1 hour.
Bake in a pre-heated 325 degree F. oven for 1 hour.
This dish should serve 4.
