In India he/she is known as Avalokitesvara; Quan Yin (or Quan Shi Yin) in China; Kannon in Japan; and Kwanum in Korea.
This bodhisattva represents compassion and kindness and appears as male, female, or androgynous. Compassion and kindness are without gender.
The thousand arms represent the many ways kindness can be expressed.
Bodhi means "awake" and sattva means "being." So bodhisattva is an awakened being.
