The Experiential Spirit of Buddhism

Seeing into one's own nature is not the fruit of study or research. It is a profound insight derived from living in the heart of reality, in perfect mindfulness. According to Bodhidharma, Zen is:

.........a special transmission outside the scriptures, not based
.........on words or letters, a direct pointing to the heart of
.........reality so that we might see into our own nature and
.........wake up.

In the fifth century, when Bodhidharma came to China, Chinese Buddhists were studying Buddhist texts that had recently been translated. they were occupied more with systematizing the ideas and forming Buddhists sects than with practicing meditation. Bodhidharma's statement was like a thunder clap to wake them up and bring them to the practice and experiential spirit of Buddhism.
