Apple Dumplings

8 apples, cored and peeled
3 cups of flour
1 teaspoon of salt
1 1/4 cups of shortening
1 egg, beaten
1/3 cup of cold water
1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup of butter
1 cup of brown sugar
4 tablespoons of water

Mix the flour and the salt. Cut in the shortening.

Combine the beaten egg, the 1/3 cup of cold water, and the vinegar and stir into the flour-shortening mixture. Let this stand for a few minutes.

Roll out the dough on a floured board and cut it into squares, each large enough to wrapped around an apple.

When an apple is completely wrapped in dough, place it in a greased 9"x13" baking pan.

When all the apples are wrapped and in the baking dish, combine the butter, the brown sugar, and the 4 tablespoons of water. Bring this butter-water mixture to a boil and pour it over the dumplings.

Bake the dumplings in a pre-heated 350 degree F. oven for 40 to 50 minutes or until the dumplings are golden brown.

Serve with ice cream and/or a coffee.

For a variation, sprinkle a little cinnamon-sugar over the apples before wrapping then in the dough.
