The Many Colors of Buddhist Practice

Followers of the Buddha can practice this religion without adhering to any school or sect.

Because Buddhist have been encouraged by the Buddha to carefully inquire after the truth, they have been free to interpret the scriptures according to their understanding.

The religion, the philosophy which the modern Western World calls 'Buddhism' is very different in its external practices from what the Buddha and his early students carried out. Centuries of cultural and environmental influences have created Sri Lankan, Burmese, Thai, Laotian, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Tibetan, and many others expressions of the practice of Buddhism.

These many practices are not in conflict, because the Buddha taught that while the Truth remains absolute, the physical manifestations of this Truth can differ according to the way of life of those who profess, practice, and teach it.
