Selfish Desires
King Bimbisara once asked the Buddha, "Why am I unhappy?"
The Buddha, always appealing to reason, answered, "It is not because you do not have money that you are unhappy. It is not because you lack fame. You are unhappy and you will continue to be unhappy no matter how rich and famous you are, as long as you have selfish desires. If you can overcome those selfish desires, you will live in abiding joy, which is nirvana. Sire, I can show you the path by which you can get rid of these selfish desires."
