The Buddha taught the doctrine of
kamma (Skt.
karma), which is the law of cause and effect. According to the Buddha, a person is the architect of his and her own destiny. It is unnecessary, therefore, to seek help from external agents, such as gods and goddesses. The Buddha advocated freedom of religion, freedom of thought, and, by today's measure, democratic principles for a harmonious society.
