The Middle Way
The Buddha taught the dangers inherent in sensual indulgence. He also warned against the temptation of self-punishment.
He used the example of people who practiced self-inflected punishment and the resulting pain. These people performed severe austerities in the mistaken view that they would overcome what they perceived as their weaknesses and gain strength to achieve salvation.
The Buddha's vision, in contrast, entails cultivating a middle way. On this Middle Path, the individual does not get trapped in either the dead end of sensual indulgence or its opposite, self-punishment.
