To join hands together is a bodily manifestation of deep and profound respect.
In Indian tradition the right hand is sacred and the left is impure. If the right and left hands join it indicates the sacred and profane are one.
This gesture expresses the original face of humanity.
Buddhism adapted this gesture for showing respect to others.
The Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh has said this mudra (hand gesture) is symbolic of offering a lotus bud to the Buddha Nature in all Living Beings.
