Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate

Everything that we encounter in Zen training, all of the devices and skillful measures, are provisional means to get us to see the truth. All of it—every form and ritual, the words, ideas, koans, insights—is specifically designed to ultimately self-destruct. We really can't hold on to anything because there is nothing to hold on to. During our spiritual training we are presented with different practices and techniques, appropriate ways to see the True Self. We take them, chew them, fully digest them, make them our own, and let them go. And continue on. When we get to the peak of the mountain—the clarity, boundlessness, and compassion of enlightenment—we chew it up, fully digest it, let it go, and keep going. Endlessly.
