The Buddha emphasized he was only a guide to show people the Path. He taught he was not one who could give liberation. He always spoke of individual responsibility. He encouraged each person to develop himself or herself to work out their own emancipation, to liberate themselves from the bonds of greed, anger, and delusion through their own personal effort and intelligence.
