The Yijiao ching ("Sutra of the Bequeathing of the Teaching") likens the Buddhist practitioner to an oxherder who—ever watchful, ever patient—herds his ox with stick in hand, never letting it stray. In Chan tradition he becomes a model for the meditator, who must constantly guard his or her mind to prevent it from straying into defilement.
