The Language of Meditation

Samatha is the Sanskrit word for meditative calming. The Chinese translate samatha with the word zhi, which literally means "to halt" or "to fix in place."

Vipasyana is the Sanskrit word for meditative contemplation, or insight. The Chinese translate vipasyana with the word guan, which means "to discern or observe."
