“As a Republican, I value equality, personal freedom and a more limited role for government in our lives,” Dent said in his statement. “I believe this philosophy should apply to the issue of marriage as well.”
A Republican U.S. Congressman from Pennsylvania has announced his support of marriage for same-sex couples. “Life is too short to have the force of government stand in the way of two adults whose pursuit of happiness includes marriage,” Rep. Charlie Dent told The Washington Post today.
Rep. Dent becomes the sixth Republican in Congress to announce support for marriage equality. Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, whose son is gay, announced his support in 2011. Rep. Richard Hanna of New York offered support in 2012. Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois announced his support last year, along with Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida.Quoting from the Pennsylvania ruling, “in future generations the label same-sex marriage will be abandoned, to be replaced simply by marriage,” Dent said that in “conversations with my family, I have come to realize that they already see the world through that lens.”“As a Republican, I value equality, personal freedom and a more limited role for government in our lives,” Dent said in his statement. “I believe this philosophy should apply to the issue of marriage as well.”
Noting that in Dent’s home state of Pennsylvania 56% of Pennsylvanians support the freedom to marry, Marc Solomon, national campaign director for Freedom to Marry, said in a statement, “We congratulate Rep. Dent for doing the right thing by his constituents and his country in supporting the freedom to marry. He joins the growing Republican wave across the country that believes in individual liberty and stronger families. The freedom to marry is the future of the Republican Party – and the entire country. America is ready now for the Supreme Court to bring national resolution on marriage.”
