There is a Tibetan metaphor about a clean cloth being placed on a dung heap and another clean cloth being placed over some incense.
The cloth on the dung will pick up the aroma of the dung.
The cloth on the incense will take on the aroma of the incense.
In the same way, the environment in which practitioners place themselves can have a powerful influence on their minds. This is especially true of those who are not yer advanced in their practice.
