The Naga

Another Sakyamuni motif relates to the story that he remained seated upright under the bodhi tree for seven weeks after his awakening, during which time torrential rains fell. The Buddha was protected from the storms by the naga or serpent king Mucilinda, who is depicted like a five- or seven-headed cobra, coiled under the meditating Sakyamuni as a pedestal with hooded heads spread above him as a protective nimbus.
