The Taoists believed that after Lao Tzu composed the
Tao Te Ching, he departed for the West to convert the "barbarians." His travels brought him to India where he became the teacher of the young man who was to become the Buddha. According to some accounts Lao Tzu
was the Buddha. This doctrine remained a source of controversy between Buddhists and Taoists in China until the Mongolian Buddhist emperor Kublai Khan banned it by decree in 1281.
