When, in the thirteenth century, the Japanese monk Dogan was studying in China, an old cook from a Zen monastery said to him, "To study words you must know the origin of words. To endeavor practice you must know the origin of practice."
"What are words?" Dogan asked.
"One, two, three, four, five," the cook answered.
"What is practice?" Dogan asked.
"Nothing in the universe is hidden." the cook answered.
