Black Walnut Squares

1 egg
1 cup of brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1/2 cup of sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/8 teaspoon of baking soda
1 cup of chopped black walnuts

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Beat the egg until it is foamy, then beat in the sugar and the vanilla.

Sift together the flour, the salt, and the baking soda.

Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture and stir together.

Fold in the walnuts.

Spread the batter in a well-greased 8-inch square baking dish.

Bake until the top has a dull crust.

Cut it into squares while it is still warm and still in the pan.

Allow the squares to cool before removing them from the pan.

Serve with a strong coffee or black tea.
