According to Mahayana Buddhism, all sentient beings are endowed with buddha nature. There is no essential difference separating buddhas and bodhisattvas from ordinary people, the only distinction being that buddhas and bodhisattvas are those who are enlightened whereas ordinary people have not achieved the same realization about the nature of reality.
