Everyday Buddhism

Whoever destroys life
disregards truth and abuses the senses.

Whoever intoxicates their mind
to the point of heedlessness
destroys their very foundation.

Cease this suffering.
Cease your greed and mischief.

The one who envies the gifts of others
will never know peace.

Cut down the tree of envy
at the roots and enjoy lasting peace.

There is no fire like hatred,
no rushing river like craving,
no trap like delusion,
and no snare like illusion.

It is easy to see the faults of others.
It is hard to see the faults of your own.
How easy it is to gossip
about the faults of others,
yet hide your own
as a cheat covers a losing hand.

When you dwell on the faults of others
you multiply your own.
How far you are
from the end of your journey.

~The Dhammapada verses 246 to 253
