The
very meaning of Buddhism is to not imitate anyone. There is nothing to
imitate. Be yourself.
It's
rather pointless for Americans to imitate Japanese or Tibetan or
Korean Buddhist customs.
We
respect the customs from other lands. We respect our Ancestors in the
Practice. We respect the forms our Teachers and Ancestors have
practiced, but always the Practice has to be integrated into the
Present Moment.
In
twenty-first century North America, it is rather ineffective to keep
alive some archaic form that existed in thirteenth century Japan.
